A 1990 Audi 90 marks the first import [and our first non-GM at that] to be featured on Cars on Campus. This example was found sitting behind the residence halls. In the days when Audi was just beginning to take strides in producing BMW and Benz-worthy competition, the 90 was the equivalent of today's A6. It was marketed between the Audi 80 and 100, respectively.
Audi Quattro, the company's unique all-wheel drive system, was still relatively young at this point having come out just 10 years prior. It proceeded to make Audi famous after proving itself in world rally competitions. This example seems to have lost its badges somewhere, thus I was only able to discern it as being Quattro-endowed after looking at the rear window glass. Interestingly, the Quattro logo is spelled out in the defroster heating element.
These cars were equipped with various 5 cylinder engines for 1990 and throughout their model run. A 4 cylinder turbo diesel was also available. Given the choice between a three speed automatic and a five speed manual transmission, I would have to go with the stickshift. So, it seems, would this driver.
The owner of this car took it easy when customizing their ride. The only recognizable change from stock is the addition of some cool rally inspired lights up front. I'm not sure but I would assume the dull paint on the lip of the hood is some sort of paint-on bug or rock chip guard. What appear to be aftermarket web wheels at first glance are actually factory pieces. The totally rad spoiler is factory as well believe it or not.
With the exception of a busted rear taillight and a few missing name badges, the car is in great shape for being as old as I am. I wouldn't be surprised if this were a car that had fell victim to some campus hooligans that went around smashing taillights just last week. We really have to find some other means of entertainment up here. Aside from that, Audi's rarely suffer from any rust issues. Every Audi produced since 1975 benefits from a galvanized zinc coating. Even the paint still shines!
