Earlier this year Toyota hinted at the future of their hybrid division with the release of the FT-CH concept platform. The controversial styling and sub-Prius size left many wondering where such a car belonged in the Toyota lineup. It appears the Prius minivan concept shall hold the answer.
The concept is admittedly larger than the existing Prius and adds more utility to the hybrid platform. Although the concept appears to only seat 4, Toyota expects the production version to accommodate 5-7 occupants in three rows of seating.
The van borrows several aesthetic features from the FT-CH such as the headlights' continuance from the windshield glass and a rather bulbous front end. However the car also expands on these design traits with the typical hybrid kammback and a panoramic sunroof bringing welcomed light to the interior.
New Lithium Ion batteries will be sourced from a joint-venture between Toyota and Panasonic. These batteries will be smaller in size than those of current hybrids allowing for greater interior space. Besides this, everything left is speculative. Mileage figures, options and cost have yet to be announced. Rumor has it that the hybrid van will be ready for market next year. Expect updates to follow.
With the great success of the Prius sedan, Toyota has been reluctant to elaborate on their winning formula. Honda has followed in their footsteps all the while, yet currently boasts three hybrid iterations in the Insight, CR-Z and Civic hybrid. Toyota should stand to benefit by offering a broader range of hybrid offerings.

Love the design, but sadly too many people that want to buy the car will die of natural causes before it ever gets built.
Perhaps a few likely buyers won't make it for another year, but word has it that a production model will be in show rooms next year. It's rumored that this project has been in the works for awhile. Don't be surprised if this comes to
...fruition sooner than expected.

I am the owner of a 05 prius, very happy with it. entertained the idea of trading for a 2010, but, seeing the 011 , decided to wait for the newer model. I recognize a carrot waved in front of my nose, (concept car), when I see it. This would be a major mistake to promote this as an 011 then not come across with it. "surprise me."
I agree with you 100%, Jack. Toyota has made a few mistakes in the past by cutting important cars in their lineup. Not sure who is promoting this as an '11 or '12MY, whether it's actually Toyota or just the over-eager auto media, but this is a chance to do some good and perhaps attract some buyers. Basically, dont f*@% this up.
hi0Zfz Well, actually, a lot of what you write is not quite true !... well, okay, it does not matter:D
