Last night's 500m Olympic speed skating event was absolutely unwatchable and it wasn't because people skating is boring to watch. On the contrary, I personally think that they should just show speed skating in super slow motion the entire way through. I'd watch 10 hours of that. Honestly, there is nothing cooler than the way a world class speed skater moves. Their movement is what Usain Bolt would look like if he was running on clouds.

The problems at last night's events came from crappy ice on the oval track. The Zamboni machines that were supposed to smooth the ice by resurfacing it had a multitude of issues last night. The Richmond Olympic Oval houses two Zambonis but were forced to live with only one last night after the first started acting up. That is, until the second machine had issues after the first 10 pairs raced. As a result, the racing was delayed for an hour before one of the machines reappeared and proceeded to do a shit job of resurfacing.

The Zambonis last night were electrically powered, maybe with a little liquid courage (gasoline) they would have been able to do their jobs. The choice to use electric versus traditional Zamboni machines came down to a decision by the organizers of Vancouver 2010 to attempt to be green.

Going to a school where hockey is our only D1 sport, the Zamboni driver, Stu, has become a cult hero. Stu performs after games by drifting and doing donuts on the ice.

TheCD's Take: It seems ridiculous that at such a big event with so much money invested, that there was only one backup. Dear Vancouver, always have a plan C.

That's actually an Olympia, not a Zamboni. The correct term is ice resurfacer. Kind of like how everyone calls bandages Band-aids, or tissues Kleenex.

I hate you. The source article called them zambonis

GRAMMAR POLICE!!!

I guess Jen can't make the connection that Zamboni and "ice resurfacer" are synonymous.

Jen is the type, that when you say "I need a band-aid" she'll be like, "nope I only have adhesive bandages"

LOL

Sorry, I hate Olympias! Zambonis are so much better. They're actually trucking one in from Calgary because the Olympias failed so hard. But lovely article :)

Wow what a ridiculous convo! What does everyone think of the Winter Olympics?

The olympics are good. NBC's coverage sucks. It pretends that events are live when they happened 12 hours earlier.
