Lately, every Super Bowl brings waves of excitement for the commercial offerings. Sadly, this year was the perennial disappointment that we've come to expect. It seems that for the most part, the companies advertising during the big game just wasted 2.5 to 3 million dollars per 30 second spot.
Yet, in the darkness of largely unentertaining advertisements, the headlights from a number of car commercials shown through brightly. There were 10 automotive related ads shown during this year's big show:
Audi:
The ad featured a re-recorded version of Cheap Trick's Dream Police, dubbed Green Police, and featured very high production values. The ad was largely hilarious but the message may be lost on American viewers. The advertisement is for an Audi A3 Diesel but Americans simply hate diesels.
Bridgestone:
Bridgestone featured two ads this year, one about a whale, and one about a wife. Personally, the latter was the more entertaining one.
Cars.com:
Dodge:
Man's Last Stand was the title of the ad and it was frankly a minute of pure testosterone.
Honda:
A paper mache squirrel trying to fit all of its paper mache crap into a tree nook? I get that Honda was trying to advertise the new Accord Crosstour's space but they could have illustrated it better or at least more proportionately.
Hyundai:
Hyundai was another company with two ads this year, one about its paint quality and the other about its 10 year warranty. Just like with the Bridgestone ads, the latter was the funnier and thus more interesting ad. The former was literally like watching paint dry, no matter how beautifully it was shot.
Kia:
When we heard the words Kia + Yo Gabba Gabba + Super Bowl ad, we feared for our lives. This ad was the surprise of the show. Loud, colorful, and beautifully surreal (especially the tattoo bit).
Volkswagen:
The VW ad was spectacularly funny, brilliantly shot, and a novel concept. We saved the best for last here (well not really, this one was near the end of the alphabet). Best Super Bowl Ad of 2010, for me at least.
