Volkswagen of America has issued a recall for 13,172 Audi Q5 crossover vehicles of the 2012 model year because the panoramic sunroof can shatter in cold temperatures and weather conditions. The supplier of the sunroof glass had a production process issue, which thus created the susceptibility to cold weather.
According to the NHTSA report, during the 2011/2012 winter season, a small number of Audi dealers reported sunroofs breaking. The parts were sent back to Audi for analysis, and as part of the laboratory testing at -40 degrees Celsius, only a small number of glass sunroofs actually broke. Audi then determined the root cause and is therefore now issuing the recall.
If glass shatters while the driver is operating the vehicle, it could cause an accident or at the very lease distract the driver. Audi will notify owners beginning August 7, 2012 and dealers will replace the glass free of charge. If you're an owner and have more questions, you may call Audi at: 1-800-253-2834
