The folks over at AutoExpress have just confirmed that VW will be producing a model that is very similar to the BlueSport Concept. For those of you who are not familar or may have forgotten the BlueSport concept, it was Volkswagen's two-seat diesel-powered roadster that was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

According to AutoExpress, the production vehicle will be powered by a 178 hp 2.0 liter diesel engine or your choice of 1.4 liter or 2.0 liter engines. The 2013 Volkswagen BlueSport is expected to have 0 to 60 mph acceleration in about 6.0 seconds. The vehicle will come a standard 6 speed transmission though an automatic and dual-clutch will be offered.

On the outside, the only noticeable change from the concept is reflected around the lights. Stylist have added LED running lights and have slightly reshaped the head lamps and front fascias; other than that this are very few changes from the concept.

The BlueSport, which will be about the same weight as a Mazda Miata, features an ultra lightweight aluminum frame. This combined with start-stop technology and regenerative braking should guarantee fuel economy around 45 miles per gallon.

When the BlueSport makes it's showroom debut in 2013, expect it to compete with Honda's CR-Z hybrid and quite possibly an new entry level sport-hatch from Toyota.
